    Nominations for the 2011 Salute to Women Awards

    Saturday, February 5 - Green Building Workshop Series
    Attend the first Eco-City Alexandria Green Building Workshop to learn do-it-yourself improvements that save energy and increase comfort for your home, apartment or small business. The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Sister Cities Conference Room 1101 at City Hall, 301 King Street.     The Alexandria Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is committed to your business' success in 2011- including our important nonprofits!  In addition to our many resources I am pleased to announce our comprehensive START, MANAGE, GROW educational programs beginning in January.  Whether you are a startup or successful business, you're guaranteed to receive valuable information that will help your business thrive in the new year.

    Please review the information for each program below and note where registration is required.  THERE IS NO FEE for attending any of these programs.

    Tuesday, January 4, 2011: The first in our Brown-Bag Lunch Series held on the first Tuesday of every month from noon to 1PM @ Connect113, 113 S. Columbus Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. Business owners are invited to bring their lunch, network and learn nuggets of knowledge from experts.  A Q & A session will follow each presentation and we'll get you back to your business promptly @ 1PM!   January topic: "Hear how Search Engine Optimization (SEO) plays a strategic role in social networking platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter and how your marketing and communications will be expedited." Presented by DeeNice Rhodes, "the Digital Dynamo."     Tuesday - Wednesday, January 18 -19, 2011:  Social Networking Counseling.   Businesses who are ready to improve their social networking and use of social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) are encouraged to schedule 45 minute one-on-one counseling sessions with media expert Ray Sidney-Smith of W3 Consulting.  These monthly sessions are designed to help you enhance your presence and move forward with your social media strategies.  Please contact Patricia Melton at pmelton@alexandriasbdc.org to receive a brief questionnaire/signup form.

     

    Thursday, January 20, 2011: State Contracting Counseling.  Businesses registered to do business with the State of Virginia through the eVA system are encouraged to schedule 45 minute individual sessions with Will Vehrs, Business Services Manager of the Virginia Department of Business Assistance.  In addition to already being registered under eVA, owners should be SWaM (Small, Woman-Owned and Minority) certified.   These sessions are scheduled monthly on a first-come basis.  Contact Patricia Melton at pmelton@alexandriasbdc.org with your name, company name, address, telephone and e-mail address.  For information on getting registered on eVA and becoming SWaM certified go to www.eva.virginia.gov

    Wednesday, December 8 – Community Meeting on Priority Transportation Projects Funding Proposal A community meeting will be held to discuss a funding proposal regarding Alexandria’s Priority Transportation Projects. This funding proposal is being developed as part of the FY2012 budget process to identify short and long term projects that address Alexandria’s most pressing transportation needs.     Arlington County IT Department to Hold Informational Seminar for Businesses Interested in Doing Business with that Department

     

    The Arlington County, Virginia Department of Technology Services (DTS) will conduct an Industry Briefing on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, beginning at 9:00 A.M.  The goal is to create an open and transparent understanding of the County's technology directions and ensure all potential information technology providers have an equal and fair opportunity to compete for County business. DTS and other County Agencies will present the state of the County's technology, current and pending initiatives, future plans and where the County seeks assistance in defining its direction.  The process by which interested firms register with the County to ensure they are aware of and included in future solicitations will also be presented. The County presentations will be followed by a question and answer period. 

     

    The presentations will be conducted in the Arlington County Boardroom, 2100 Clarendon Boulevard, Suite 300, Arlington, Virginia, 22201.  Due to space limitations, each attending firm will be limited to two participants.

    High Capacity Transit Corridor Working Group – November 18

    The City of Alexandria invites members of the public to attend the High Capacity Transit Corridor Work Group meeting on Thursday, November 18 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the Landmark Mall, 5801 Duke Street. Members of the public should enter at the second level (north entrance near transit center), vacant retail space on left side after entering the mall. The meeting will focus on a review of existing conditions, transitway concepts, and evaluation criterion.
