Jerome Buddie Ford Nature Center -- Saturday programs October - December Schedule 5750 Sanger Avenue The City of Alexandria is offering new Saturday programs for the entire family this Fall. The new schedule of programs includes:
Saturday, Oct. 1 - Family Birding (Families)
9:30 - 10:30 am
Calling all birders! Look, learn, and listen to the resident birds of Alexandria while taking a leisurely walk on the nature trail. Guidebooks and binoculars will be available for sharing.
Saturday, Oct. 1 - Seasonal Seeds (Families)
2 - 3 pm
Join a naturalist in a hike through the woods looking for seeds and identifying which plants they belong. Afterwards, create a seed project to help identify seeds in your own backyard.
Saturday, Oct. 8 - Colors of the Season (Children, ages 6 - 12)
2 - 3 pm
Lets take a walk through the Dora Kelley Nature Park while fall colors are at their prime. Learn how and why leaves change colors and what to expect next.
Saturday, Oct. 22 - Painting with Leaves (Families)
10:30 am - noon
Leaves come in all shapes, sizes, and fall colors. Come and create a work of art using different leaves. There will be painting, so dress accordingly.
Saturday, Oct. 22 - Bulbing Basics (Adults)
2 - 3:30 pm
Tulips? daffodils? or both? It is time to plant bulbs. Learn how to prepare a beautiful yard for the spring.
Saturday, Oct. 29 - Squirrels, Squirrels, Everywhere! (Preschool)

How are pinecones, acorns, holes in the ground, and squirrels all linked together? Join a naturalist on an exploration to find out. Take a hike and conduct an official squirrel count.

Enjoy a peaceful morning walk through the woods. Field guides will help identify flying friends.

Get creative with fall. Make crafts that will help decorate any home for the fall season.

Lets talk turkeys. Come celebrate and learn more about the Wild Turkey. Create a take-home craft.

How can animals stand the cold weather? Learn different ways animals prepare for winter, where they go, and what they do. A walk in the woods will follow.
Saturday, Dec. 3 - Animal Tracks (Children, ages 6 - 12)

What animals have been here? Find out how to identify animal tracks and signs. Use taught skills for a walk through the woods and create a track mold to take home.
Saturday, Dec. 10 - Hibernation Habit (Preschool)

How can animals sleep all winter? Learn which animals hibernate and for how long.
Saturday, Dec. 17 - Winter Weather (Children, ages 6 - 12)

Learn about weather factors, terminology, and instruments. Make take-home weather instruments and participate in hands-on experiments. ------------
Saturday, December 10 - Fort Ward Annual Christmas in Camp Open House 12 pm - 4 pm Military and civilian interpreters will welcome the public to the Museum, which will be decorated with period greenery and a Victorian tree, and invite them to visit soldiers in winter camps. A highlight of the program will be a Civil War-era Santa Claus, dressed according to a wartime image popularized by illustrator Thomas Nast. Santa will visit the troops, hear children's holiday wishes, and read The Night Before Christmas. The Museum's Officers' Hut will be the setting for soldiers opening Christmas boxes from home and sharing how they plan to observe the holiday far from home and family. Inside the Museum, visitors will enjoy period music and light refreshments. Weather permitting, soldiers will conduct guided tours of the fort. Suggested donation is $2/adults and $1/children.

Friday, October 7 -- Empowered Women International Evelyn LaPierre Award Ceremony 5:30 - 7:30 pm Durant Center 1605 Cameron St. The 3rd Evelyn LaPierre Awards features Nora Partlow, Successful Entrepreneur, a native of Cuba, Flory Jagoda, Sephardic Musician/Composer, a native of Bosnia, and Klara Sever, Sculptor and Restorer, a native of Czechoslovakia. The event includes a sculptural exhibition of Klara Sever, sponsored by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, silent auction and Ladino Music. Saturday, October 15 -- Public Hearing FY 2007 Budget 9:30 am Council Chamber, 2nd floor City Hall, 301 King St The Alexandria City Council will conduct a public hearing on Oct. 15 to receive public views, needs, and priorities regarding the upcoming Fiscal Year 2007 Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Program. The Oct. 15 budget public hearing is intended to provide public input prior to the preparations of the FY 2007 budget, which will be proposed by the City Manager in mid-February of 2006, in addition to the traditional public hearing, which will be held in late March, on the proposed submitted budget.
Anyone wishing to speak should complete a speakers form before or at the hearing. These forms are available in the City Clerks Office, Room 2300, City Hall. Speaking requests can also be made directly to the City Clerk by e-mail at jackie.henderson@alexandriava.gov or by phone at 703.838.4500. Individuals with disabilities who require assistance or individuals needing special arrangements, such as translation services or language interpreters, to participate in the City Council meeting can call the City Clerk at 703.838.4500 (TTY/TDD 703.838.5056). A 48-hour notice is needed for special accommodations, so that the proper arrangements can be made.
