Share the Past  --  Collections

Some of Fort Wards most prized collection objects and important reference discoveries on the Defenses of Washington and wartime Alexandria have been provided by interested public patrons. The Museum staff is always seeking new information and objects to help expand knowledge and interpretation of this historic defense system and Civil War Alexandria. This includes photographs taken in the Defenses, as well as letters, diaries, and military records pertaining to soldiers stationed in Alexandria and the District of Columbia forts, and civilians residing in the area. If you have historical material to share, please contact Fort Ward Museum at 4301 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA 22304; 703-838-4848. Photocopied materials for the Library reference collection on the Defenses of Washington are appreciated, and may be forwarded to the Museum at the above address.

Fort Ward Museum also welcomes donations of original objects and documents related to the Defenses of Washington for inclusion in its permanent collection. If you are interested in donating original materials to the Museum, please contact the Director at the above address and telephone number.

Volunteers Wanted

Volunteers at Fort Ward Museum greet visitors, answer questions about the site, give tours to school groups, and help with living history events.

Friends of Fort Ward

Founded in 1982, the Friends of Fort Ward is dedicated to preserving the historic fort and museum collections and encouraging public recognition and use of this unique Civil War site.

The Friends of Fort Ward provides funding for projects such as:

    --  The publication of Mr. Lincolns Forts: A Guide to the Civil War Defenses of
         Washington by B. Franklin Cooling and Walton H. Owen,
    --  The Men of Fort Ward by William J. Miller
    --  The Civil War Diary of Anne Frobel, Dallas and Mary Lancaster, eds.
    --  Professional conservation of Museum objects such as a rare colored
         lithograph of The Battle of Gettysburg.
    --  The purchase of professional collection storage units for the Museum.
    --  Purchasing objects for the Museums collection.
    --  Museum exhibitions.
    --  Guided bus tours of Civil War sites
