Re West End

Re Eisenhower Valley

1.    Modes of transportation: Which modes of public transportation and ease-of-use  solutions for private transportation do you  support which will encourage local residents and visitors to increase their purchases from businesses in –

I support public transportation, and we need to be very proactive about supporting mass transit. Specifically, we need a combination of extended bus service hours to and from the Metro, bus rapid transit, as well as circulator buses. Down the road, we should add more Bikeshare.

Eisenhower has mass transit, which is a huge advantage for residents, visitors and business owners. In addition, public parking, which is free and ample, needs to be in place. Plus, Bikeshare will be helpful.

2.    Attracting new businesses: Which mechanisms do you support which will attract new businesses to and encourage them to locate in -

We need to make Alexandria more business-friendly. We need to simplify our permit process and make the whole process faster. We need to streamline the paperwork for a business owner and support measures to encourage entrepreneurship. We need to demonstrate that we are proactive in terms of mass transit. The West End needs more locally-owned, small cafes. The city should focus on attracting small cafes there. Create a small plaza where the cafes can be, thereby creating a destination place.

Eisenhower could use some locally-owned, small cafes, and the city needs to do more to plan for small cafes, especially within a small plaza with a fountain (a la Shirlington). Make Eisenhower Valley a destination place.

4.    Small Area Plans:  What initiatives and  timeframes do you support for the completion of development for the:

a.    Beauregard Small Area Development Plan.

Regarding Beauregard, I remain concerned about the loss of affordable housing units in the plan despite the promise of 800 affordable housing units. That still leaves about 1,600 who will be left out of the deal. I am also concerned about the very expensive proposed circle.

b.    Landmark Shopping Mall

Landmark is now owned by three entities. This property has languished for many years. All stakeholders, including local residents, need to come to the table and work out a possible plan. But local input at the outset is key, especially regarding transportation and overall vision.

c.    Eisenhower West End Development Plan: What is your commitment to maintaining the schedule of the City’s Eisenhower West End Development Plan and, specifically, economic development in the Eisenhower Valley?

n/a

I am committed to maintaining the schedule, working with the residents, developers, and the local business owners of Eisenhower.

5.    Help for existing businesses: Which specific measures will you promote which will increase the growth, customer base, revenue, and expense minimization of  businesses currently located in –

We need to be more proactive about creating a business-friendly environment in Alexandria. Encourage residents and business owners to join staff at planning meetings and get their input at the outset and throughout the process. In addition to support for Metro and circulators, public parking needs to be ample and free in order to encourage customer ease.

6.    Developer Taxes: Will you encourage that taxes which are raised from developers be spent on (1) matters pertaining specifically to the developer’s project or (2) City-wide infrastructure services?

Generally speaking, monies raised from developers for a specific development need to stay focused on that area’s infrastructure needs, including affordable housing, mass transit needs, park and/or open space, sewage capacity, fire and emergency services support, schools, etc.

7.    National Science Foundation: How do you plan to encourage the NSF’s coming to Eisenhower Valley and selecting one of the three sites it is considering there?

N/A

It would be excellent if the National Science Foundation would relocate to the Eisenhower Valley. Working with the AEDP, Alexandria could entice the NSF with various incentives and build-out support. One critical item the NSF needs is space for its conferences and attendees, preferably a major hotel across the street from its headquarters. It also needs many small cafes and eateries for its conference attendees and employees.

8.    Victory Center: What are the tangible solutions you will implement to promote Victory Center for immediate tenancy and development?

N/A

Working with city staff and the AEDP as well as other stakeholders, Victory Center needs a special working group to create a marketing plan and overall plan of action. This is a prime location for our city.

a.    By what date do you expect first tenant to assume occupancy in Victory Center because of those solutions?

Same answer as for Eisenhower Valley.

As soon as possible.

9.    Campaign Signs: What is your plan to remove all of your political campaign signs following the election?

Beginning on November 7th, our campaign team will be out in force to pick up all of our yard signs. Please know that this is a top priority of my campaign. After the primary in mid-June, my team immediately went all over the city and picked up our yard signs.

10. In 30 words or fewer, why should Alexandria business-owner voters vote for you?

I will bring a sense of mission to our community, for we are all the temporary stewards of this national treasure called Alexandria. I believe in fiscal responsibility, streamlining paperwork for business owners, as well as public involvement at all levels of government.
